How prevalent is suicide?

In the United States, suicide is one of the leading causes of death. Suicide can affect anyone, regardless of their background. It is a global issue that does not discriminate based on demographics. Dial 988

Upon completing my research, I discovered a contact number for individuals who can reached out to the suicide hotline. It's free, and they are always available to assist. If I wasn't aware of this hotline, imagine how many others might not know about it.

Studies indicate that there are shared factors that may drive a person to commit suicide:

  • A past record of suicide attempts.

  • A preexisting mental health condition.

  • A medical condition that causes pain, disability, or has a terminal outlook.

  • Challenges related to finance, law, housing, or employment.

  • Interpersonal trauma includes physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, as well as neglect, isolation, or bullying.

  • Changes in relationships (such as divorce, a breakup, or the death of a loved one).

  • Lack of access to healthcare or medical services.

  • Ideals rooted in culture or religion.

  • Intense stress.

If you prefer not to talk to any of your friends, consider calling a suicide hotline. Always keep in mind that help is available. Alternatively, you can contact your local police department for immediate assistance. Remember, there are numerous options available to you.

What steps should I take if I or someone I care about is considering suicide?

  • Dial or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Speaking with someone can be beneficial, whether you're facing a crisis or simply experiencing a tough day. Keep in mind, you're not alone. If you or someone you know is in danger or an unsafe situation, contact 911 or your local emergency services number right away.

  • Create a safety plan. A safety plan is a compilation of strategies to assist you or someone you care about in feeling better during a crisis, such as experiencing suicidal thoughts. This plan might contain actions you can take independently and with the support of others.

  • Talk to someone you trust. This could be a friend, a family member, a teacher, or a healthcare professional. There are people in your daily life who can offer support when you need it.

Furthermore, it is beneficial to remain with someone contemplating suicide. Provide them with the personal space they require but ensure they are not left alone to cope on their own. Having someone available to converse with and provide support, when necessary, can be very helpful.

Note I'm not a doctor, so if you're experiencing suicidal thoughts, please reach out to a professional for help.

Contact 911, 988, or your local police department. But contact someone. Your life matters let that be known.
