The legacy of Candy Red
In the 1990s, we lost a beloved sister far too early. Known as "La Candy Red," she was from McAllen, Texas, and also went by the name "Jose Guadalupe Salinas".
In the 1990s, expressing yourself through fashion was not widely accepted. Many people considered you a freak for doing so. The initial reaction, which persists even today, is to label your mindset as crazy.
I'm from the 1980s era, but I was just a child at the time, so I never had the chance to meet the beautiful soul "La Candy Red". During that time New York and other states were advocating for LGBTQ rights, McAllen, Texas, little that we knew they were also fighting for their rights.

In Texas, we had never heard of any Trans individuals being murdered like in New York, until one day I stumbled upon an article about "Candy Red". Imagine my surprise upon seeing this. The initial thought that crossed my mind was how anyone could have the courage to take another person's life.
This beautiful soul was separated from her family at the age of 27. She had only just begun to live her life. Candy wasn't the only girl murdered during that period. My sources informed me that there were around 15 other transgender women in McAllen that were gone way to soon.
They believed a serial killer was targeting the LGBTQ Community. As a result, whenever they went to the club, they always left in groups due to the ongoing killings. After leaving the club, my sources also mentioned that members of the straight community would seek out fights simply because of their animosity towards the LGBTQ Community.
According to my sources, Candy's body was discovered with bruises on her hands, implying she looked like she had been restrained with a seat belt. She was abandoned in the rain on the south state highway 107 at Iowa Rd, presumed dead. However, the autopsy revealed that she had drowned.
My sources' say that the killing's reminded them of the border patrol that was killing women in Laredo, Texas a couple of years ago. My sources also indicate that there must have been more than one person attacking Candy that night. If it had been just one person, Candy could have managed to handle one person. My sources also informed me that after all the killing's, they simply just stopped.
Why would anyone want to harm a soul? Regardless of what people do in their personal time, killing should never be acceptable. Miss Candy understood herself well. She enjoyed being a woman and appreciated men. Like everyone else, she wanted to have fun and, when the time was right, she desired marriage.
But because someone took her life way to soon, she didn't get the chance to get it.

Several of my sources say that Miss Candy was an incredibly soulful individual, and they lament not having known her better during her lifetime. Her family continues to seek justice for her death. She is buried in McAllen, near the Plaza Mall.
Though times are evolving, people continue to harbor animosity towards each other's sexuality, me included. We must transform this mindset collectively. Consider the possibility of your child not returning after an outing with friends. Let this serve as a reminder to impart positive knowledge to your children and avoid instilling hatred in them and others.
Consider whether you want your child to experience this or if you prefer to see them lose their life and miss out on a lifetime of opportunities.
Some of Candy's friends allowed me to share a picture so her legacy can live on, reminding us that she once had a purpose, and she still does. Be true to who you aspire and don't let judgmental people dictate your life. Your friends and family cherish you deeply and will always remember the brief moments they shared with you, even though they feel it was far too short.
Over the years, the case became a cold case that can easily be reopened to examine what the older officers might have missed, which someone from this generation might be able to catch.
If anyone possesses information regarding Candy Red's death, please report it to the mission police department. Any details could help bring peace to her family.
The Conclusion
This story is not meant to offend anyone or criticize any family members. I offer my heartfelt condolences to all the family members and friends. May "Candy Red" rest in peace and let her legacy live on by promoting awareness that hate crimes are unacceptable everywhere.
Rest in Peace, My long-lost sister. "Candy Red"
